Next into the shop was the front axle, this is also a willys unit but once again on the outside looks to be in good condition.
Before i started the strip down i treated myself to a sand blast cabinet. This was a good decision as it made cleaning the rusty parts a breeze.
Draining the oil didn't show up any nasties and when the front diff cover was removed i was very relieved to see clean, smooth tight gears. Removal of the swivels was quite easy and the bendix shafts were also in good condition. The diff bearings, wheel bearings look to be original and in very good condition, the swivel bearings however are badly grooved from 70 years of left and right turns, so will be renewed.
