Part Two - The Fight for Normandy
“The fight for Normandy” – Volume 2: American airborne forces landed behind enemy lines just after midnight on D-Day creating confusion among the German defenders. Despite landing sometimes many miles from their objectives, achieved their D-Day missions securing the way for amphibious landings on Utah beach.
Infantry and combat engineers suffered grievous casualties on Omaha beach, contrasting with Utah beach where forces landed on the wrong part of the coastline, well away from heavy German defences.
Once landings were made, the tenuous footholds had to be rapidly expanded into practical beachheads allowing for the massive build-up of reinforcements and resupply that would carry the invasion across north western Europe.
